Domestic Violence Awareness

Jamaicans of the Palm Beaches, Inc. organizes a walk-in support and to raise awareness of Domestic Violence/abuse in early October each year starting at 8 a.m. at Gaines Park, 1501 N. Australian Ave, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. Our annual Domestic Violence awareness walk started in 2010 following the tragedy of Natasha Whyte (Palm Beach County resident) and her four children, who were murdered by her husband. Seeing a mother’s casket with her four children’s caskets, two on either side of her casket, leaves an indelible image about the atrocity of domestic violence. At this awareness walk, a knowledgeable person on Domestic Violence is invited to speak about the topic and members of the community and other organizations are invited to attend. Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence (AVDA) works each day to provide safety, housing, and support services for victims of domestic violence while simultaneously running prevention programs throughout the county. AVDA is very supportive of our efforts to reduce the impact of violence and abuse in Palm Beach County. The 24-hour hotline is: 1-800-355-8547 or visit the website at www.avdaonline.org.

Breast Cancer Education
Early Detection saves Lives
The Jamaicans of the Palm Beaches, Inc seeks to educate both women and men about breast cancer. The women are encouraged to do monthly self-breast examination (SBE) starting at age 20, yearly breast clinical exams, and mammograms after age 40 to aid in preventing breast cancer. Collaboration with other organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and JFK as necessary is important to continue the decline from breast cancer deaths due to better screening, early detection, increased awareness, and treatment.
Educational breast cancer sessions are done at different locations; a short talk is given, video shown, clinical breast exams done, and prescriptions given for mammograms if needed which maybe low or free of cost. Clients practice SBE on models, and written handbooks given. Anyone can request an educational session at their church, club or at other events. For further information, contact Dr. Ann Marie March, DNP at (561) 385-1621.
Annual Health Fair
Over the years, Jamaicans of the Palm Beaches, Inc. Annual Community Health Fair has been and still continues to enhance healthier lives within the community. The Health Fair provides much needed medical assistance for adults and children, health information, general screening awareness/prevention and education to underserved persons from doctors, nurses and others. The event is free and open to the public. Over the past 27 years, we have provided free physical examinations and immunizations for children ages 2 months to 18 years old in preparation for the new school year. Refreshments and healthy snacks are served. Also, we provide back-packs and school supplies to children who needs them. For adults, we provide physicals, HIV testing, glucose and blood pressure screening, cholesterol testing, and breast cancer screenings. We are a recognized 501(c) (3), tax-exempt organization (EIN:65-0348218) and our Annual Health Fair is usually held in early August from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at a venue decided on each year. The last Health Fair was held at the Grace Episcopal Church Hall, 3600 Australian Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407. There were over 500 participants. We have received financial and general assistance from community organizations that are committed to providing healthcare for children and families.
